Teleconference: "Towards 100 years of the School of Public Health of Mexico"

Within a framework of a series of events for the 2022 centennial celebration of the School of Public Health of Mexico (ESPM), Dr. Juan Rivera Dommarco, General Director of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) and Dr. Eduardo Lazcano Ponce, Academic Dean of this institution, organized a teleconference for July 8, 2020, titled, "Towards 100 years of the ESPM" with functionaries of the institutional establishment, former ESPM directors, as well as officials of the Mexican government and international organizations expected to be in attendance.

Dr. Rivera will facilitate the teleconference and introduce Dr. Laura Magaña Valladares president of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health in the United States of America (ASPPH) and former INSP Academic Dean (2005-2017) who will deliver her lecture: “The role of ESPM in the global transformation of public health education”.

Subsequently, Dr. Carlos Santos Burgoa, Professor of the Program of Global Health Policy of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, and ESPM former Academic Dean (1989 and 1995), will present his lecture: “Challenges for the execution of public health functions”.

Dr. Enrique Ruelas, President and Director of the International Institute for Health Futures, and the first ESPM Academic Dean (1987-1989) named after it merged with the Center for Research in Public Health and the Infectious Diseases Research Center to form the INSP in 1987, will continue with his lecture: "Importance of public health education in public policies and the operation of health systems."

Dr. Lazcano Ponce, named Academic Dean in January 2020, and whose long professional career within the INSP includes directing the Health Population Research Center (2004-2018), and who recently concluded a year’s sabbatical (2019) at The Australian National University in Canberra, will give a lecture on: “The future of the ESPM”.

The next lecture will be offered by Mexico’s COVID-19 czar Dr. Hugo López-Gatell, former INSP Director of Innovation in Surveillance and Infectious Diseases Control of the Health and Infectious Diseases Research Center (2012 to 2018); current Undersecretary of Health Promotion under President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and who will be part of the World Health Organization’s expert panel on forming International Health Regulations to confront COVID-19. His lecture be: "The new competencies for Mexico public health professionals".

The teleconference is just one of several activities to reaffirm ESPM’s commitment to maintaining high-quality and up-to-date academic programs that highlight the role of institutions facing public health challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
